  2. My father Mr H S Lall was a great musician and was closely associated with Mr Shipley as he was a Principal in one of the best schools of Calcutta and would write the English staff music notations for most of the SJ songs and for the background score also. He had great praises for Mr VAN SHIPLEY .UNDOUBTEDLY Shipley was MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUITAR

    1. Hemant, sorry for the very delayed reply. It is very interesting to hear about your father and about him knowing Mr Van Shipley. If you have any further information you would like to share, would you please write to me using the link above?

      Thanks.

    2. Sorry Hemant Lall, your father did not write musical notations and stop taking credit for it. He may be a Principal in one of the best schools of Calcutta but what has that got to do with talents of SEBASTIAN, the arranger for Shankar Jaikishan, to write on the spot notations for Shankar Jaikishan music? Your father might be assisting Sebastian, but do you have a photograph? If you have no evidence that he was part of the SJ orchestra, you please don't perpetuate this internet scam and falsehood.
      Everyone, please read the article:

  3. Hello. It was so good to see this website. I have fond memories of him. In my childhood Van Shipley would often play at many church meetings. Are there any gospel recordings of Van Shipley? - Timothy Gaikwad- timothysgaikwad@gmail.com, www.timothygaikwad.com

    1. I don't know if Uncle recorded any gospel songs, Timothy. I'll have to check with Ingrid Van Shipley about that. Which reminds me that I also have to update the links to the instrumental pieces on this site.

  4. I am sorry but after the demise of the principal actors, many people try to rewrite history. The notations for Shankar Jaikishan music were written by Sebastian from Goa and not by anyone else.
Secondly, Van Shipley, a very nice gentleman that I met during their East African tour, had nothing to do with RK film Barsaat or its iconic violin music. Please correct this mistake. It is not fair to two great violinists Menezes and Narvekar. Please read the entire article :Background notes: Menezes, Narvekar, and the untold history of violinists in Hindi film music
Reference: https://scroll.in/reel/816122/background-notes-menezes-narvekar-and-the-untold-history-of-violinists-in-hindi-film-music. The biographer on this blog has copied information from this source and substituted Van Shipley's name for Joe Menezes and Harishchandra Narvekar.PLEASE REMOVE THE SCAM BIOGRAPHY AND GIVE SHRI VAN SHIPLEY DUE AND LEGITIMATE CREDIT HE DESERVES NOT LIES.

Late Shri Van Shipley was a very well known artist. He was famous for his filmy tunes on his Hawaiian guitar, which is a string instrument played with fingers. To play violin is a whole different game than playing a guitar. However, Van Shipley did play violin but he was famous for his Hawaiian guitar tunes of filmy songs. Like Enoch Daniels, he was one of the musician in an orchestra but top artists for this East African trip in the 1957 were Talat Mehmood and CH Atma. I know this because all four of them visited us in my school.
I hope the blogger here corrects obvious lies and gives credit to artists who really were the MAJOR part of RK films.
